I sometime DJ at Ecstatic Dance events… and I like to make each DJ set unique - with special remixes and/or mashups. Last year I created this mashup of Belinda Carlisle's 'Heaven is a Place on Earth' with Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' as part of an uplifting Día de los Muertos 'Day of The Dead' Ecstatic Dance set.
When I originally put the two songs together I had one of those goosebumps moments - it sounded like 'Heaven is a Place on Earth' [1987] was actually written to the music of Thriller [1982]. Even the BPM (Beats Per Minute) are almost exactly the same. But the actual weirdest thing is, the two songs are the yin & yang to each other - the dark and the light, the Black and White Duality, the polarity whole...
See what happens when we put the lyrics side by side, Belinda Carlisle in blue italics:
[Verse 1:]
It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark
When the night falls down I wait for you and you come around
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
And the world's alive, with the sound of kids on the street outside
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
When you walk into the room, you pull me close and we start to move
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, you're paralysed
And we're spinning with the stars above, and you lift me up in a wave of love...
[Verse 2:]
You hear the door slam and realize there's nowhere left to run
When I feel alone I reach for you and you bring me home
You feel the cold hand and wonder if you'll ever see the sun
When I'm lost at sea I hear your voice and it carries me
You close your eyes and hope that this is just imagination
In this world we're just beginning to understand the miracle of living
But all the while you hear the creature creepin' up behind, you're out of time
Baby I was afraid before, but I'm not afraid anymore!
[Chorus:]
'Cause this is thriller, thriller night
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth?
And no one's gonna save you from the beast about to strike
Ooh heaven is a place on earth
You know it's thriller, thriller night
They say in heaven love comes first
You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight
We'll make heaven a place on earth, ooh heaven is a place on earth!

To top off the mashup, I have just finished making a music video for it, that contains a 1 minute animated version of the famous Thriller dance scene!! Watch it here:
